Stephen Garside

Certified Trauma Informed Mental Health Practitioner / Specialist Advisor

Stephen Qualified as a Teacher in 2000, completing his Post Graduate Certificate in Education at The University of Warwick. Since then he has worked across a number of special school settings in Coventry, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Birmingham and has spent over 15 years as a Headteacher at several schools. Through his career he has worked with young people with a wide range of needs, including PMLD, Complex Medical Needs, Autism, ADHD and Social Emotional Mental Health needs.

Prior to qualifying as a teacher, Stephen worked as a carer across various settings and in the community. He started this role as a Bank Auxiliary Nurse on the Children’s wards and Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Oldham Hospital, before moving to support children and adults with learning difficulties, elderly adults with dementia and spending some time working alongside therapists to support adults in stroke rehabilitation at Rugby Saint Cross Hospital.

Stephen has always had a child and family focussed, therapeutic approach to education and has worked very closely with Links Therapy for the vast majority of his career (often being accused by the team of being a wannabe therapist, but preferring the title therapeutic educator).

Having gained Certified Trauma Informed Mental Health Practitioner status in January 2026, Stephen has now moved on from Headship in order to follow a more direct therapy based path and to support school settings and colleagues in education to promote a more trauma informed, therapeutic approach, and to meet the wider needs of the pupils in their schools more effectively.

INTERESTING FACTS

If you could travel back to one specific point in time, when would it be and why?

I would definitely go back to the 1990’s. Great music, mobile phones didn’t exist (or were just phones), no responsibilities and lots of hope and optimism. I would make more of the time and definitely travel a lot more than I did.

What’s your favourite time of year and why?

Spring – New beginnings, new life springing up everywhere and lighter, brighter, longer days.

What is the best part of your job?

It’s too early to say with this new venture, but I hope that it brings me the best bits of my career to date. The opportunity to advocate for young people and their families, to get the best possible provision. The opportunity to work directly with young people and adults to overcome barriers and create opportunities that give you those little break throughs and “wow” moments that live with you forever. The opportunity to work with staff and providers to give them the skills, abilities, and hopefully the passion for the important work that they do. I feel privileged to be in a role that can make a positive difference to people’s lives.

What makes you happy?

Being out in nature, regardless of the weather, brings me joy. Being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Even better if you have family and friends along with you to share in the moment.

What are your Hobbies and Interests?

I enjoy walking, watching rugby (now that I can no longer play it), going to the theatre, concerts, traveling and experiencing different cultures, and reading (which I don’t do enough of).
